He was born May 16, 1926 in Lock Haven to J. Mervin and Laura Elizabeth Miller Kelley.
Don graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1944. He attended Lock Haven Teachers College and graduated in 1949. He obtained his master's degree from Penn State University in secondary education.
Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a ship's cook third class.
On May 21, 1948 he married Alice Greninger.
Don was a teacher for 34 years, five years in Flemington and 29 years at the Lock Haven Junior and Senior High School.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and a daughter, Karen.
Surviving are a son, Terry P. Kelley of Middleburg; a daughter, Kathy K. Kenderish of Fredericksburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Sean P. Kelley, Chris S. Kelley, Amanda J. Holt, Katelyn K. Kenderish, Erin E. Kenderish and Kira Banfill; a brother, Paul Kelley, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Don was very active in the local Bellefonte and Williamsport Council. He was a member of the LaFayette Lodge 199, F&AM, having served as worshipful master in 1968. He was a member of the Hospitaller Commandery, Knights Templar 46, and was Eminent Commander in 1956. He also served as treasurer and recorder from 1986 to 2009. Don was a member of the Red Cross of Constantine, Scottish Rite and Williamsport Consistory. Don also obtained the York Rite Cross of Honor.
He was a member of the Clintondale United Methodist Church and the American Legion and was a life-time member of the American Rifle Association.
Don was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He spent many enjoyable moments cooking and running model trains. You could always find Don in his orchard, garden or tending honey bees.
Graveside memorial services with full military honors and Masonic services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Joan Gordon.
Memorials will be accepted to the Clintondale United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven.
